I think those can definitely be helpful. I personally prefer to ask questions after the technical portion of the interview, but to each their own. One thing that I cannot recommend strongly enough: ask clarifying questions about the prompt. They can save you a lot of going down a dead end or spending time implementing unnecessary stuff.
